Unless you do a fantastic job of tightly tying the ad to the company selling the product, people will associate it with the most well known brand in their minds. A year later it ends up a meme.
Also when I read that sentence about the Monopoly guy, I pictured the Monopoly guy with a monocle even though I know it’s Mr. Peanut who wears one. Strong association.
To be fair, I only ever associated Ed McMahon with the idea of him showing up at the door with a giant check.
