Jeff Landry Makes His Move
In a video shared on social media today, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced he is, in fact, running for Governor next year. I think Jeremy Alford at LaPolitics has the best note on all this: This doesn’t change much regarding the race for Governor, but it does solidify some things in the race for Attorney General. Landry’s top deputy, Liz Murrill, has a campaign website set up, and Rep. John Stefanski made his announcement earlier this week.
The 2022 midterms aren’t over, but 2023 has already begun.
Is Clay Higgins In Trouble?
It is very hard to beat an incumbent. But I do wonder if Rep. Clay Higgins is in trouble in Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District. There is some polling out there that suggests he might be, but there are some whispers that some of his negatives might actually hurt him. Consider the Holden Hoggatt ad that hits Higgins over his back child support. That will play a factor in turning women off Higgins, but now Hoggatt needs to give people a reason to vote for him.
It’s very similar to the situation in Georgia, except the incumbent is a Democrat who knows that people will see the negative ads and stay home. He’s actually banking on that. That is roughly where I think any challenger to Higgins would be right now, but while Raphael Warnock is a known quantity, Higgins’ challengers aren’t. They need to give voters a reason to vote for them.
