Shortening The School Week
Acadia Parish is asking stakeholders to fill out a survey on whether or not the district should move to a four-day school week. They wouldn’t be the first district in Louisiana to do so. Caldwell, Avoyelles, and Franklin Parishes have made the move, along with more than 1600 schools around the country. But, is it the right move? There is lots of research on the pros and cons, and some of the benefits advocates tout take a while to come about (if they do at all). However, this isn’t something that will just impact Acadia Parish. It could have ramifications in surrounding parishes, as well.
Restitution For Lockdowns
The Lafayette Parish School Board, meanwhile, is weighing what to do with regard to threats that force schools to lockdown. Going through seven lockdowns at various schools over the course of seven days in early October, everyone agrees that something has to be done. But there is little consensus on what should be done. LPSS has confirmed with its lawyer and the District Attorney that the district has the right to seek restitution for actual damages incurred during lockdowns that have taken place because a student posted a prank threat online. The district’s lawyer did say this would be a civil rather than a criminal matter, and there is a question on what restitution they could seek.
The January 6 Committee Will Subpoena Trump
Multiple news outlets began reporting this afternoon that the January 6th Committee, which has been investigating the riot at the Capitol in 2021, will issue a Congressional Subpoena for Donald Trump to appear before them. There was breathless coverage and celebration of this in the media and on social media. The problem?
A subpoena like this can be delayed with months of court battles and appeals. The clock on this subpoena will wind down before they could get him in front of the committee. But that’s probably not the reason they want to issue it. They just want him to respond. They want him to find a camera or to post a statement on Truth Social and use that to keep the newscycle focused on him, because they think it will help them in November.
I’m not so sure.
