This is so fascinating to me because I never really thought about it before and I think that’s exactly the point of this tweet (WARNING: Langauge).
…Damn. That’s absolutely correct. Game of Thrones was probably one of the biggest cultural moments we had in the last decade and in the moment it was the only thing anyone could talk about. It was impossible to escape it. I tried to watch a couple of episodes but never really got into it. Almost everyone I knew did, though.
But then, it happened. The last season. The one that was basically a shot in the dark as far as what direction the series should go in because there is no final book in the series to have dictated a general direction. Because George R.R. Martin never finished the book (or, perhaps, never started it), the writers really had nothing to go off of.
And boy was that a trainwreck. I loosely followed the events because, again, everyone was talking about it, but I never watched the show in the first place. Everyone was just mad, and it was hilarious. Die-hard fans were mad because it logistically deviated from the actual direction of the series. Non-reader fans were mad because it made no sense. Feminists were mad because women finally started coming to power only to screw it up more royally than the men ever did. I was mad because I didn’t have the time or the energy to watch previous seasons and get caught up enough to join in on the chaos.
But now the thing is just gone, man. Nowhere does it appear in pop culture. The last season was apparently so bad that we have all collectively scrubbed it from our minds, which is awesome.
Part of me wonders if this will eventually be so scrubbed from our minds that some people will claim to remember it the same way some of us remember a movie where Sinbad was a genie and I swear to God that movie exists but it could very well have been so bad it was scrubbed from pop culture so completely that everyone pretends it didn’t happen and oh my God that’s how the Mandela Effect really happens isn’t it?
…Sorry. Got a little lost there. Anyway, this is partially being written so I have a written record somewhere that we as a society were interested in this show at some point before it disappeared.
Loeffler vs. Warnock: The Debate
Here’s a little recap of some of the debate between U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler of Georgia and her run-off opponent Raphael Warnock. The state of Georgia has the unfortunate luck of hosting two Senate run-offs that will determine control of the Senate come Biden’s presidency.
2020 continues to be 2020, forcing us all to endure this nightmare of an election season.
