Independent Women Side With Republicans
Today’s New York Times/Sienna poll is bad for Republicans for all sorts of reasons, but in particular, the fact that women who identify as independent have switched from supporting Democrats to Republicans is absolutely astonishing.
In September, the poll had showed D +14 among independent women. But now, it’s R +18. That’s a 24-point flip in the span of a month. But it gets worse for the Democrats from there. Remember how they wanted to make the overturning of Roe v. Wade their key issue?
Remember how they wanted Trump and the fate of democracy to be what gets people to stick with them? Trump is up +1 over Biden in this poll.
John Fetterman’s Wife: “De Facto Candidate”
In what was arguably the most revealing deleted tweet of the weekend, Kara Voght of Rolling Stone identified Gisele Fetterman, wife of U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman, of being the “de facto candidate” of the race.
I’ve got a breakdown as to why this isn’t good here.
The Great Insurance Commissioner Race
I actually can’t type that sub-head without falling asleep. But here we are, actually talking about the Commissioner of Insurance race in 2023.
Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon has been in some office or another since the late 70s. In 2006, he took over as Insurance Commissioner and has been there ever since. In 2019, a Republican challenger by the name of Tim Temple ran, dumped his own money into the race, and came within a few points of beating Donelon.
Temple has announced another bid for the job, this one coming on the heels of a 63 percent rise in homeowner’s insurance rates - one signed off on by Donelon. Now, to be fair to the current Commissioner, he was pretty much required to by law. But insurance rates in just about every category either are going up or feel like they are going up thanks to inflation. That puts Donelon (who has not announced a re-election bid yet) in a tighter spot than he was in last year.
